julie doesn't make a habit of downloading controversial apps, but... well, maybe she was just looking for a little excitement. when a fellow vlogger sends her the files with a lol u should play this, it doesn't take too much convincing to hit the install button. [break][break]

the words dangerous and adventure stick out to her and julie can't help but laugh. at least mika can't get on her case about partaking in a fictional one. hm! she stares at the choices whilst chewing on her lip, sighing as she really thinks it through. if julie wanted an adventure, she could go straight to death crater, but something with the word death felt like it'd be an insta-KO. "could go somewhere in the middle, i guess..." a cry interrupts her thoughts and, curious as to what his trainer is distracted by, julie's zorua hops up onto the bed opposite of mary. tilting her body slightly in his direction, julie shares the screen with him, letting him paw at the phone. [break][break]

the tell-tale ding of a choice being made echoes from the speakers, julie's head tilting and peeking over her zorua to see the selection. LEVEL 5 - MIRAGE PALACE is greyed out on the screen, shalin's dialogue box filling. sion seems satisfied with the choice, opting to snuggle against julie's side to watch. "well. could be worse."

"'fiery path,'" she echoes, a little scoff escaping her at how simple the trek shalin makes it seem. however, when the pokemon are revealed she can't help the expression of shock that crosses her features. a pyroar she can kind of see. it can... probably carry someone like how her own bewear princess carries her around, right? but a skuntank? a beedrill? how would the second even work? [break][break]

she ponders momentarily on the choice to make, wondering if she should just use her own pokemon. but she should probably leave the journey to one familiar with the path, right? suddenly, she blinks, laughing to herself. "it's just a game... why am i thinking so hard...?" with a sigh, she taps her finger on the screen, deciding on LETHEIA.[break][break]

As you sit behind Shalin, astride the icy fox, you can feel her powerful strides rock you back and forth. Her body, radiating mist, does shield you from the heat nicely, though! The ride to the palace is a bit rough and tumble, what with how much foxes' backs flex as they run. Once she arrives with the two in tow, Shalin recalls Letheia, the two of you landing squarely on your feet. "We're here! C'mon, let's take a look around inside!"[break][break]

The exterior of the palace wavers in the heat of the magma moat deep below, though far more than physics would explain. She hops on her Skuntank's back and looks ready to tear off across what appears to be a magma-filled gap between the cliff and the double doors leading to the palace's interior. There appears to be a sign mysteriously floating in midair, on the same level as the ground your mount is standing on.[break][break]

"oh, that sounds fun," she murmurs as she reads the narration, absentmindedly scratching at sion's back. she's only ever gone ponyta riding as a young girl (aside from events in which pau has to carry her to safety during their travels). maybe she'd get a chance to actually partake in a ninetales riding now that she's away from home? [break][break]

julie is quick to be pulled out of her thoughts though, reading the narration box once, twice and thrice. literal magma and her guide is ready to just. go on without her? "wait!" comes the reflexive protest, an acrylic tapping insistently on the screen. "there's a sign, and you're just gonna go off?" she blows out a sigh, eyes rolling. still, just reading it on her own didn't seem too smart. what if shalin really did just leave her while she was distracted? that'd be the pits. [break][break]

"we're reading it together, hopefully..." tapping on the second option, julie leans back into her pillows. [break][break]

You call for Shalin to stop and read the sign. She sharply reins her Skuntank back, sounding a cry as he rears, his tail filling with musk. Ultimately, she stops to read the sign to you aloud. It reads as follows, in prominent lettering:[break][break]

SOFT NO-RESCUE ZONE -- ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK[break]
Entry to Mirage Palace is inadvisable except by the most highly skilled adventurers. If you enter, you do so knowing that if something were to happen and you need help, we cannot guarantee Rangers will be sent to rescue you.[break][break]

As you read the sign and ponder its meaning, you hear the sound of a Skuntank cry not dissimilar to flatulation. Peering toward its source, you see Shalin's Skuntank steed seemingly walking about in midair, on the same level as the sign. Not once does she or her poison-type mount stumble or fall. No matter how hard the Skuntank's footfalls are, they are completely silent.[break][break]

When she reaches the end of the span, she reaches for the unusually low-positioned doorknob and turns it, the large double doors fading into wisps of yellow light and revealing a grand hall. "What are you waiting for? Let's head on in!" There is no visible ground beneath her and the magma far below, yet the Skuntank could walk on seemingly nothing.[break][break]

Shalin looks like she wants to run ahead with you. How do you cross the void to catch up with her?

she reads the text in awe, eyes wide. disregarding any hope she had, shalin seemingly rides on ahead of her as her avatar is distracted by the warnings. maybe she should turn back here? but this isn't real life. julie could do anything and everything she wouldn't do otherwise. right. there was no need to be logical. after all, walking on air above magma? yeah. nothing makes sense here. [break][break]

"oh dear, what is even going on..." she sighs in exasperation, eyes closing. well, no point in turning back now. however, she does have a few questions. would the shalin made up of pixels be able to respond? [break][break]

"'i'm not familiar with this place'..." she says aloud as she types into the last dialogue box. her character moves across atop her ponyta as the avatar talks, soon joining shalin's side. "'who or what lives here? is there anything important here?'" she looks down at her skitty, head tilting alongside mary's. "i'm sure she'd be automated to answer something like 'who' and 'what,' right?"[break][break]

Shalin's smile drops some as you express concerns over the lack of familiarity with the Mirage Palace. She seems a little unhappy to have to repeat herself, but obliges nonetheless.[break][break]

"Like I said on the way here, it's a mystic palace erected in defiance of reality. Very little is as it seems." As to demonstrate, she gently kickesher Skuntank's sides, the poison-type, bushy-tailed Pokémon ferrying her about the width of what appeared to be an invisible bridge. "See? It's solid!" To prove her point even further, she takes out an empty Poké Ball and rolls it toward you. "Now hurry up - bus is leaving!"[break][break]

Shalin looks all too eager to get inside, her mount crossing all the way to the palace's large, external double doors. How do you cross the void to catch up with her?

"even if the dialogue was implied on the way, it's still somehow..." her skitty playfully wags her tail in her face, julie sputtering in response and brushing it to the side. "it's fine. i expected as much," she says simply, mary seemingly satisfied with the response. the tail is curled back around her body and julie begins pondering her options. [break][break]

You ask Shalin for a land Pokémon to cross the bridge. Happy that you trust her assessment, she tosses a Poké Ball upward, and you find yourself being ferried by her Alolan Ninetales. You bask in the refreshing cool radiating from her back before she lets you off at the entrance's double doors. Shalin withdraws all her Pokémon but her Ninetales and Skuntank, then enters through the disappearing double doors.[break][break]

Within the palace's entry chamber is a row of life-size statues of people wearing robes and holding jeweled rods, as well as statues of fire-type Pokémon known for their paranormal powers, such as Kantonian Ninetales. Shalin rambles on about Spectacle Rock in Sootopolis as she guides her unusual Skuntank steed up a small staircase to a double door on the north side.[break][break]

"hm... i suppose that's what happens when you're not a local..." shalin rambles, but julie only smiles in confusion. aw, heck. might as well ask for some clarification, right? she decides to ask about the spectacle rock, hoping she doesn't just charge on ahead without her. if there's something she's come to learn during the short excursion is that their exploration style definitely wouldn't mesh if they were in some medieval universe like in those video games. julie was much more cautious than her appearance and usual actions suggested.
